The state of Amazonas has adopted a plan to compensate local communities to refrain from felling and encourage its citizens to participate in activities such as rubber tapping and fishing instead. The scheme is funded by several large companies.

According to the Governor, some 460 million USD in 2013 is necessary to expand the program into new areas and create buffer zones around existing projects. According to a study by McKinsey consultants, which cost around 7.8 billion dollars for Brazil to reduce deforestation to zero.

Of Brazil's current official target is to reduce by half the rate of deforestation of the Amazon in the next ten years.
