The Yanomami are one of the last primitive tribes in the world. The population is roughly 20,000. 10,000 live in the south west of Venezuela and almost 8,000 in Brazil. In Venezuela most of Yanomamis lives in the national park Parime Tapirapeco. It is the largest national park in Venezuela, with 34,000 km2!
Some Indians have left the park and now lives closer to the communities and / or missionary stations.
We will visit the Yanomami in the Rio Siapa and Cassiquiare Rivers (the river connecting the water systems of the Orinoco and the Amazon river!).
We also organize expeditions to the Rio Ocamo, where there are less contact with outside visitors.
Itenario of the Expedition:
Arrival in Puerto Ayacucho. Breefing / Meeting, and discussion regarding issues to the Yanomami Tour.
The expedition guide speaks: Spanish, and English.
Transport by canoe with a motor of 40 horsepower and backup of 25 Hp. For safer water transport we use aluminum hulls for traveling faster - and to pass dangerous rapids.Overnights in hammocks. On the beach of the river (only in the dry season) or in the jungle. Some nights we will spend in the Yanomami communities (Shabonos). We will be confronted with the local Indians with great respect and it is very introverted. Avoid taking photos until we have permission from the chief. We will interchange gifts and photos with the Yanomamis.
We will spent with the Indians some days and see how they hunt, fish and generally live - and we will understand there extremely fascinating culture. Return to Puerto Ayacucho.
The expedition to the Rio Ocamo is for people who already have experience in the jungle. Rain, mosquitoes, heat and lack of comfort are a big part of this adventure!
We need special permit from the government to visit the Yanomami. So please scan / copy your passport, and send it to us by e-mail - at least 2 months before the expedition starts. The expeditions to Rio Siapa and Casi Guiare are for most people who want adventure and you do not need experience in the jungle beforehand.
