Visit this area of the country is a priority for almost all tourists who come to Venezuela and residents who enjoy the beauty of their own country. It is within the homonymous national park of 3,000,000 acres in the northwest part of the state of Bolivar. Furthermore, in the rainy season is the starting point for excursions to the base of Angel Falls, the longest and highest in the world. The indigenous community and surrounding tourist offers Canaima Lagoon waterfalls bordered Ucaima Wadaima, Golondrina and Hacha, and basically the tepuis Deer and Vulture.

The pioneers
Canaima is named after Charles (Charlie) Baughan, an American pilot TACA company who discovered the ideal place for a tourist resort jungle in 1947. But he could never crystallize his dream of developing the resort because he and his wife died in a plane crash near Higuerote. The Dutch Truffino Rudy and his wife Gertie (of Austria), founded Camp Ucaima (better known as Jungle Rudy) in 1956 on the banks of Limpkin, a little above the Hacha and the Canaima Lagoon.

Many decades ago, the airline Avensa Canaima Camp opened next to the Laguna, the first large, relatively luxurious site, taking advantage of the fabulous location. Of course, through the line, received promotion to national and international level, and became an essential destination.

Another legend in the area, the peruvian Tomás Pérez Bernal, rode his camp Anatoly Island in Laguna in 1983. Two years later, he discovered a spectacular but very narrow path (about 80 cm wide) behind the curtain of water Sapo. Recognizing the potential as a tourist attraction in 1985 made the wider road / insurance (and was put in prison, despite not being affected at all the jump!) And opened a path to get there. Fortunately, he was released and this is the second most popular ride Canaima (after the excursion to Angel Falls)!

TO GET
It can land, but it is impractical and requires a 4x4 winches, gas cans ... The usual way is plane, the main route from Ciudad Bolivar (a flight of a little over an hour). I recommend spending the night in Ciudad Bolivar the night before the tour in order to make the first flight in the morning and start the ride, after arriving in Canaima & y, let the flight details on your travel or accommodation to be used. my experience I can say it is mission impossible to try to contact directly the business lines or Internet to check prices / availability.

Worth paying the commission to the agency and leave the problem to them!

A good option Posada La Casita! Always stay in your accommodation (with swimming pool, vast green spaces, tranquility, free transfers between the inn and center, indoor parking, security, economic and tasty food, Internet, personalized owners) when I'm in this area I flew to Canaima with them four times, with Auyantepui flyby, and the trip to Angel Falls one of these trips.

I found the two planes in excellent condition, professional pilots, punctual departures, and competitive prices.

Also, no matter if it comes in your vehicle (you can leave your luggage at the inn for sure) or públicoque transport them take you to the airport and the treatment type "VIP protocol", it is in your hands from delivery ticket and security check until the plane approaches (and reception upon returning from Canaima / the inn).

In La Casita, there are options for everything: camping, sleeping in hammocks or bunks with shared bathrooms or beds and private baths / hot water in individual churuatas with fans or air connected rooms.

Accommodation and tours
In the rainy season, the priority of the visitors is going to Angel Falls, Salto Sapo followed (which in many plans is part of the package) and not so important where it is (in simple sites as most of your time will be on the rides). One such alternative is the inn KAVAC Canaima community. It has 13 functional rooms (bath / cold water, a fan, some with air) and a dining room. Through its travel agency offers 2N/3D plan with return flight Ciudad Bolivar-Canaima, lodging, meals and rides (in the rain, to Angel Falls, with drought to Orchid Island and sites around), ( It is possible an overflight of Angel Falls paying extra).

But in the dry season, when it is not possible to reach Angel Falls (only flyover option) and the dry Sapo, a nice place is the best idea to recharge, relaxing there without going anywhere.

Wa-Kü Lodge is the most elegant and beautiful. The owner, Mary Garcia, is behind every detail and always with new things as a large expansion of the restaurant / social areas and is completing a reading room.

It has 15 rooms, bath / hot water, fan, che with chairs and hammocks, WiFi, use of a computer at the reception. The social areas are two-room bar super attractive social areas that overlook lush gardens (where toucans, macaws, flying loose) and lagoon. There are CCTV cameras for security, multilingual staff, and they have 19 seats for plane transfers from anywhere in the country, a helipad (helicopter flights and excursions on the tepuis through your agency).

The basic plan 1N/2D includes: reception in the Canaima airport, transfers to / from Wa-Kü, lodging, all meals, short walk to the lagoon. Optional are roundtrip flights between Ciudad Bolivar and Puerto Ordaz and Canaima other excursions.

more options
Camp Ucaima, handled the daughters of the founders. There are 16 rooms with bath (hot water only at night), a comprehensive module-bar reception room, and a living area with fireplace that overlooks the river. Bilingual guides are available and all the many plans include a reception in the Canaima airport, transfers between airport and camp (accessible only by boat), lodging, meals, a ride (double occupancy). Optional: use of kayaks, canoes, mountain bikes, shot in black and water skiing ... but, to verify this information, told me that will be available for Easter ... decades Hortuvensa Campamento Canaima was handled, but three years ago the government was expropriated and given to the indigenous community in Canaima. After a long closed for remodeling, is now open and offering, 78 of the 95 fourth originals (all air, bath / hot water, continuous). Apart from the numerous cabins with hosting, there is a huge hut with living area, dining room and spectacular view of the lagoon. The basic plan includes lodging, meals and a short walk to the lagoon.

Beside Canaima Camp, the newest offering is Tapuy Lodge, overlooking the lagoon. The elegant rooms (air, bath / hot water, hair dryer, mini-bar, are on a two-level module (the PB conche / hammock PA especially spacious with bath). A separate hut is the dining room. The basic plan includes airport reception, lodging, meals, a ride on the lagoon and taxes (for double or triple occupancy.) Air travel and other excursions are available separately through your travel agency in Caracas.

The camp Bernal, handled the founder's sons, is muysencillo but with a nice location in Laguna. A module has great social dining area in the center surrounded a wide corridor where guests can sleep in hammocks or beds with shared bathrooms.

In addition, there are four rooms with beds and a separate cottage, all triples and bath / hot water. The basic plan 2N/3D includes roundtrip transfers-airport-island lagoon, lunch and walks (in hammock / private room with bed). A visit to a day without stay, with return flight from Ciudad Bolivar-Canaima, overflight of Angel Falls, Sapo and walk to lunch costs is now possible.
